5 Steps to Appreciate Time and Live in the Present

***CONTEST ALERT – DETAILS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST***

Slowing down time is #FakeNews

Okay, I admit actually slowing down time is #fakenews and can’t be done unless you are some kind of cosmic superpower. (Which if you are, can we be friends?) But, I guarantee there are ways we can appreciate the time we have a little bit more. So in a way, we can slow down the feel of our days by simply being a little more present. Why not appreciate the time we have floating around the universe on this big rock anyways?

Living like the Fast and the Furious

I was talking to my co-worker and friend Rachel the other day, and she was telling how she feels like her life is passing quickly because of her work shift. Rachel’s alarm clock goes off at around 2:30am so she can come into work for the morning show. She’s the bubbly, intelligent one in the morning letting you know what will fall from the sky today while you sip your coffee with still one eye closed. Trust me, I’ve had the pleasure of covering in the morning shift and time seriously flies by! Between the morning meeting, getting into the studio and filling in the country with what’s next up for weather; it feels like someone hit fast-forward.

This got me thinking about my life. And how I feel similar to Rachel. Like I have been living a Fast and the Furious movie. It feels like the days have been slipping through my hands like sand lately. Maybe that is just the nature of the summer months but I sense it more now, then ever before. I think starting a new career journey really does that for you. And milestone change in your life can have you lose focus of the main objective to enjoy. So this got me thinking. How can I slow down the hours I do have and be more in the moment?

5 Steps to Appreciate Time and Live in the Present

1. Stop to smell the roses

You saw this one coming right? Of course you did! People have been saying this since the beginning of well, roses! But how to do this? For example, sometimes when I know I am in a tailspin of madness I consciously make the effort to slow down. I say things like,  “Amanda light this candle and just enjoy it for a moment”. Think of nothing else but you and how incredible this candle smells. Intervention and the opinions of others are just a fact of life. But often, the intervention needs to come from within as well. You hangout with yourself all the time, it’s natural you’re going to talk to yourself too!

2. Shake up your routine

I think sometimes we hit autopilot on our lives.

Sometimes I get in my car to drive to work, and once I park, I forget how I got there all together. It’s because by now I am so well programmed to simply walk through the motions. This comes with anything in life that finds the groove of routine. Once we settle into the ease of familiar motions it’s easy to depart the mind.

Shake up your routine! Take a different way to work, shop at a different mall, travel somewhere you never expected, drive somewhere on the weekend without a map or planned destination, or try something new on the menu!

There are a number of things we can do to shake up the simple things in life, helping us to recenter to the present moment.

3. Take the effort and make a plan

I admit, I am so bad for this. I love the idea of campfires, cottages and weekend adventures but, I wait for others to make these plans for me. Mostly because I prioritize work over everything most of the time and then just hope someone has a plan for my days off. Take control of your days off and make a plan yourself! It’s likely your friends are sitting at home wishing someone asked them to do something.

Why not make the move and plan a fun life to enjoy. At least then you’re guaranteed to do something you want to do. Which ultimately forces you to be more present because you’ll be enjoying yourself hopefully! It doesn’t even have to be extravagant. A simple phone call to a friend you haven’t spoken to in awhile will work.

4. Do you for a day and shut it down

That’s right, I said it! Be lazy. Go ahead, do it. You deserve it. You don’t have to follow the plan all the time, you’re allowed to disrupt it and take time for you! Just take a day to do the little things you love to do.

Funny how I just told you to make plans and now I’m telling you to stay at home in your sweats, dry shampoo in your hair and hermit.

Sometimes you need those days. I am a total weirdo and I honestly love organizing my closet. On days I need to therapeutically massage my soul, I go through my closet piece-by-piece. This may not be up your ally, but all the same, it helps you come back down from the cyclone of life doing you for a day.

Being on your own can help you re-centre so you can feel fully together before taking on the world again. Just post “today is cancelled, I’ll be back tomorrow” on your social media and for goodness sake take a day!

5. Create an “in the moment” trigger

This idea was given to me from a good friend of mine, and I love it! Give yourself an “in the moment” trigger. By this I mean, choose something you do every single day without fail, such as opening a door and make it a mind trigger. Every time you do this action (of turning a door handle) you will bring your thoughts to that moment. Thus making a point to consciously choose to be in the moment once you step through the door.

Aka, “I am about to walk through this door and be in the moment with what happens”.

Our minds will drift again into our daily tasks, but the next time we use another door handle we will be brought back into this moment.

Pretty cool eh! I love the idea of the daily trigger because there is no doubt you will drift out of being in the moment. However, if in the day we can somehow jolt our brain to remember to be consciously aware, we can slow down our day and enjoy those moments in between.

I know some of these things have helped for me in the past bit and I really hope they help you too. Let me know in the comments below some methods you use to be more present!

Meditation in the morning. Take a good look and explore your breath. It really sets a positive tone for the day.

Stinkin’ love this!! My favourite way to be present is to take time each morning to be thankful, and to reflect every night before bed on what the highs of my day were 🙂

I really enjoy sipping my coffee on the back porch with my two bernese mountain dogs in the morning! Even if it is only for five minutes it helps me to live in the moment and be present all day.
