“There’s lots of bad reasons to start a company. But there’s only one good, legitimate reason, and I think you know what it is: it’s to change the world.” – Phil Libin, CEO of Evernote
Meet ORIGINAL GENES – Jean Jackets Made to Order
Original Genes (OG) was inspired and created by Stefanie Furgiuele. Stefanie is a fierce go-getter who has been working within the fashion industry for what seems a lifetime. Frustrated with fast fashion she was inspired to create a company built around reusing denim jackets. The garment trade takes out a lot on the environment and because of the dying process denim is no exception. Let me take this opportunity to dig a little deeper in to OG jeans and introduce you to the brand!
What inspired you to start OG?
The hand painted jacket concept started when I was trying to find an outlet for my creativity and happened to paint on a jean jacket one day. After receiving positive feedback from my friends, I was inspired to turn this into a business and sell custom jackets around the city. What inspired me to create the brand OG specifically, was when I discovered that someone completely copied my old brand and tried to pass it off as their own. Shocked that someone would take my brand, I decided that the most important message I want to share with the world is to own who you are and be yourself.
After all, one of my favorite quotes is, “It’s better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation” – Herman Melville
Why is sustainable fashion important?
If you reuse garments instead of buying new ones it will improve your negative impact on our environment.
How come you chose jean jackets?
Jean jackets are classic pieces that will never go out of style!
What is your vision for this brand?
My vision for the brand is to be a lifestyle brand, inspiring people to be unique and always be themselves.
Who is your biggest inspiration?
My biggest inspiration is Sophia Amoruso aka the founder of Nasty Gal. I read Sophia’s novel #GirlBoss two years ago and she is what inspired me to make a business of my own. Sophia started with no money and no vision but her creativity allowed her to create a multi-million dollar company all out of her bedroom. After reading her story, I was inspired to find my own vision and was determined to start a company of my own.
What do you want the people to know about this emerging brand?
I want people to know that anything they wear can be a reflection of them.
