Discover The Magic Of Avalon Lavender Farm: A Serene Summer Escape In Ontario

19.06.24

Avalon Lavender Farm is a serene escape with breathtaking lavender fields, historical charm, and delightful farm animals, perfect for a magical summer visit.

If you’re seeking a serene and magical escape this summer, I highly recommend visiting Avalon Lavender Farm in Ontario, Canada. Nestled in the heart of Mono, this farm offers a unique blend of natural beauty, history, and relaxation, making it the perfect destination for families, photographers, and nature enthusiasts like myself. I had the opportunity of visiting during their Summer 2023 Media Preview and I have to say Avalon Lavender Farm is one of my new favourite destinations! Let me share with you why…

Experiencing the Beauty of Avalon Lavender Farm

When I arrived at Avalon Lavender Farm, I was immediately weak in the knees over the sight of over 30,000 lavender plants, both English and French, spread across seven different cultivars. These fields, hand-planted by friends, family, and the community in the spring of 2021, create a breathtaking landscape that is perfect for a leisurely stroll or a photo session. Each cultivar has unique properties suited to the Ontario climate and the farm’s diverse range of products. We were so lucky to be welcomed with a refreshing lavender beverage and a short walk from the parking lot (field parking but I have a Mini and was able to make it through! So you should be good!) over to the main event!

Historical Charm and Modern Amenities

One of the highlights of my visit was the fully restored 1881 Heritage Barn. This barn is a focal point of the farm, offering spaces for drying lavender, flexible workshop areas, and the Avalon farm shop. We didn’t have the opportunity to test out any of the workshops on this day but we were lucky to have a High Tea in the fields catered by Piano Piano.

In the Heritage Barn you will find a variety of lavender products grown and crafted on-site or in partnership with celebrated local artisans. The barn also provides treats for the farm’s beloved horses, which visitors can give with a purchase from the store.

Below you’ll also find a sneak peek to their on-site AirBnb! Imagine waking up to this view!

Meeting the Avalon Lavender Farm Residents

Avalon Lavender Farm is home to a delightful array of animals, including:

  • KitKat the Thoroughbred retired racehorse
  • Grace the Percheron and Frankie the Belgian Bay draught horses
  • Ponies Captain Crunch and Spirit
  • Barn cats Luna and Franc
  • Bunnies Lois and Bernice
  • Free-range Lavender Orpington hens and Pekin ducks

I thoroughly enjoyed watching these animals in their natural habitat, adding to the farm’s charm and appeal. They farm staff were so kind to provide us with some carrots so we could engage with the horses! This was such a beautiful and calming experience.

Exploring the Scenic River Walk

One of my favourite parts of the visit was the beautiful River Walk. This winding path takes you along the Nottawasaga River’s North Branch, offering scenic views and a peaceful atmosphere. The walk is included in the field admission and is a favourite among photographers, kids, and dogs. It takes about 10 minutes to complete a full circuit and if you’re lucky enough you’ll spot ducks along the way!

Engaging in On-Farm Workshops and Distillation

If you’re interested Avalon Lavender Farm offers on-farm workshops where visitors can learn about lavender distillation and other related topics. The farm uses a Portuguese copper still to distill lavender oils and hydrosols, providing a fascinating and aromatic experience for guests. The aroma of fresh lavender fills the air, creating a memorable and sensory-rich visit.

If you are looking to take the fresh and floral scent of lavender home there are plenty of gifts for purchase!

Perfect Picnic Spots and Photography Opportunities

With numerous picnic spots available, Avalon Lavender Farm is perfect for a relaxing meal surrounded by natural beauty. Whether you bring your own blanket and snacks or use the provided tables, the farm is an ideal spot for a leisurely picnic.

As a photography enthusiast, I found Avalon Lavender Farm a paradise for photo sessions. With its expansive lavender fields, riverside meadow, and the historic Heritage Barn, there are countless beautiful backdrops. To ensure a smooth experience, professional photographers are required to purchase a photography license. You can find all of that information here!
